‘I love a double feature’: Tom Cruise refuses to pick a side in the battle between ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’

Even though one of them is stealing all of your IMAX screens, Tom?

Having made a point of seeing virtually every new release at the nearest available theater, many have been left wondering how Tom Cruise would approach one of the greatest cinematic battles in history.

We are of course talking about July 21, when Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer roar into multiplexes in a heated conflict that’s sure to cause widespread brawls in the aisles. One is a star-studded and massively anticipated epic from an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and the other is Oppenheimer, so there’s very little between the two.

As much as you may have thought Cruise would side with the former seeing as Nolan’s latest has come along and stolen the majority of IMAX screens away from his own Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the action icon has instead revealed that he and director/BFF Christopher McQuarrie saw them both as part of a double feature.

The prospect of Tom Cruise sitting through Barbie and them immediately immersing himself in Oppenheimer is bizarre to say the least, but that doesn’t mean we’re not desperate to find out which one he preferred. Then again, being the noted defender of the theatrical experience that he is who also praised The Flash, there’s the chance he’d publicly state his support and admiration for both.

One thing he doesn’t want is for the two to end up cannibalizing the seventh Mission: Impossible movie at the box office, so it might actually be better for him to say they both sucked, and everyone would be much better off checking out Ethan Hunt’s latest adventure instead.
