Idris Elba has signed on to star in Pierre Morel’s The Gunman, a new thriller based on Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel Prone Gunman. The script is from Dredd director Pete Travis and the film already has Sean Penn and Javier Bardem on board to star.
Elba will be playing a “mysterious operative” who goes by the name Dupont. No details yet on how he’ll factor into everything but we do know that Penn will be starring as Martin Terrier, an international hitman “who is betrayed by the organization he works for and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat-and-mouse across all of Europe.” Bardem is set to play the villain.
Though he did breakout on HBO’s The Wire, Idris Elba is still not what most would consider A-list talent. He’s been cast in mostly supporting roles over the last few years and aside from his television show Luther, he hasn’t really had a chance to prove his worth as a leading man.
That being said, lately, his career has been heating up. With strong performances in films like Prometheus, Takers and Thor, and a huge role in the upcoming Pacific Rim, Elba is no doubt quickly climbing the ladder of fame and The Gunman will be yet another excellent credit to is impressive resume.
Personally, I love the guy. I’m still waiting for him to become a household name as I truly do think that the British actor does posses a ton of talent and always turns in a great performance. I don’t know why it’s taken him this long to see his career start to flourish but I’m glad to see that people are finally starting to take notice of him and give him the attention he deserves.
