John Cena emerged as one of the most surprising breakout favorites of the DC universe thanks to his instantly iconic turn as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad and then the character’s own self-titled streaming series. These days, of course, the mind behind those two projects is now the creative head of the entire rebooted DCU: James Gunn himself. Even so, Cena remains cautious about promising more of Christopher Smith.
While chatting about all and sundry, from his WWE career to his role in Fast X, to the Happy Sad Confused podcast’s Josh Horowitz, Cena was inevitably asked if there will be a Peacemaker season two. For context, a sophomore run was announced by HBO Max shortly after its arrival in early 2021, but Gunn’s hectic schedule has ensured it’s been put on the back-burner for now.
Curiously, while Gunn still seems set on making season two eventually, Cena is much more reluctant to say for certain, only offering a hesitant “I hope so, I hope so” in response to the question. On a more positive note, he went on to stress how certain he is that Gunn, and producing partner Peter Safran, are about to usher in a new golden era of DC entertainment:
“What you will see from DC in the future is the heart of James Gunn. He is not going to leave anything on the table. He is not going to make a vanilla movie that says ‘Movie’ on the end of it and then serve it to you. He will take chances, he will be brash, he’ll do things his way, but you will get authentically his creative mind, which I think is brilliant.”
Coming back around to the topic of Peacemaker, Cena offered something of a politician’s answer to the mystery and hedged his bets:
“So whether the future of DC involves Peacemaker or not, as a fan, and as a friend of James, I’m excited for the future of DC.'”
Hopefully this doesn’t mean that Cena is less than eager to don his toilet-bowl helmet again and more that he doesn’t want to put pressure on his pal to hurry up and get to work on Peacemaker season two. We might want to stay glued to Gunn’s Twitter account for further updates.
