Is there anything Meryl Streep can’t do? In the first image from her next effort, Ricki And The Flash, the Oscar-winner debuts a previously-unseen side to her talents. Brandishing a pristine Fender and a flowing mane of hair, the still showcases a devil-may-care attitude to Streep that’s seldom seen on screen. It’s hardly a revealing image, but it serves as a tasty warm-up before the trailer lands.

In the lead role of Ricki, Streep plays an ageing rocker who abandoned her family years before to pursue her rock n’roll lifestyle. When her dreams of superstardom come crashing down after a long stint playing in dive bars and such, she calls up her ex-husband (Kevin Kline) with the hopes of reconnecting with her children. Leaving California behind, she ups sticks and returns to New York with her tail between her legs to reinstate herself as the family matriarch.

Both on and off-screen, the assembly of talent suggests that while the premise isn’t exactly original, the end result looks guaranteed to be a smash. Silence Of The Lambs helmer Jonathan Demme is working his magic behind the camera based on a script by Juno scribe Diablo Cody. Starring alongside the two aforementioned names are Streep’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, real-life rock sensation Rick Springfield, Private Practice‘s Audra McDonald and Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan.

Ricki And The Flash opens in the US on August 7th.
