New Images From Disney’s Animated Adventure Big Hero 6

Many, many people were on edge when Disney bought Marvel, perhaps fearing that the studio would excise the heart and soul of comic-book characters being adapted for the big screen in service of creating family-friendly entertainment. However, this fall's Big Hero 6, the first major collaboration between Disney Animation and Marvel, doesn't seem likely to ruffle any feathers. After all, the animated adventure is hardly familiar to even Marvel die-hards, and Disney has been clear from the get-go about its intentions for the film. Now, we've got some new images from Big Hero 6, which support the working theory that Disney is going for a Rise of the Guardians-meets-The Avengers kind of vibe.

Many, many people were on edge when Disney bought Marvel, perhaps fearing that the studio would excise the heart and soul of comic-book characters being adapted for the big screen in service of creating family-friendly entertainment. However, this fall’s Big Hero 6, the first major collaboration between Disney Animation and Marvel, doesn’t seem likely to ruffle any feathers. After all, the animated adventure is hardly familiar to even Marvel diehards, and Disney has been clear from the get-go about its intentions for the film. Now, we’ve got some new images from Big Hero 6, which support the working theory that Disney is going for a Rise of the Guardians-meets-The Avengers kind of vibe.

In the new set of images, we get a look at how protagonist Hiro Hamada, a 13-year-old robotics prodigy, makes over Baymax, his softy best friend and protector, into an armored super-robot. When their city, San Fransoyko, is faced with a terrible threat, Hiro and Baymax partner with a reluctant team of heroes to save the day. Among their teammates are comic-book superfan Fred, who can transform himself into a Godzilla-esque creature named Fredzilla; Go Go Tomago, a bike messenger with the ability to transform himself into a ball of energy; and Leiko Tanaka, a young woman with a fearsome battle suit. That’s only five of the six accounted for (provided Hiro even counts), so we’ll likely hear more about additional characters as the film’s November release date draws closer.

Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) direct, from a script by Hall and Jordan Roberts, which adapts Big Hero 6 by Duncan Rouleau and Steven T. Seagle. T.J. Miller, Maya Rudolph and Jamie Chung are among the actors lending their voices to the film.

Big Hero 6 opens on November 7th.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Big Hero 6,” an action comedy adventure about brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the CG-animated “Big Hero 6” hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014.
