Indiana Jones 5 Gets Hit With Big Delay, Will Miss Its 2020 Release Date

Variety has learned that Indiana Jones 5 will no longer go before the cameras next spring, thrusting its July 2020 release date into jeopardy.

Just when we thought Indiana Jones 5 had issued a statement of intent by recruiting Jonathan Kasdan (Solo) to rewrite the script, Variety brings word that the action-adventure sequel is likely to miss its current 2020 release date.

Initially, Indy’s fifth outing was scheduled to arrive in the summer of 2020 – one year later than its original 2019 due date – but sources close to the production indicate that the sequel’s production start has been pushed back by a few months… if not an entire year.

The Steven Spielberg flick was supposed to begin filming in the United Kingdom next spring, at which point Harrison Ford would reprise his role as the world’s coolest archaeologist. Alas, that’s no longer the case, and there’s currently no mention of when Indiana Jones 5 will go before the cameras. We should stress that both Spielberg and Ford remain very much committed to the blockbuster sequel, so at least for now, the game is still afoot.

The silver lining here is that Jonathan Kasdan, son of Raiders of the Lost Ark scribe Lawrence Kasdan, has been brought on board to pen a new draft of Indiana Jones 5. Collider’s scoop makes no mention of an actual deal just yet, but should everything go according to plan, Kasdan will be working from a treatment penned by David Koepp, a long-time Spielberg collaborator whose credits include the original Jurassic Park movie.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Indiana Jones 5 as this story develops. Spielberg, meanwhile, is currently in pre-production on a West Side Story remake, so it’ll be some time yet before his busy schedule clears for Indy.
