Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is already making a splash. At the film’s premiere at the famous Cannes Film Festival, actor Harrison Ford appeared to get emotional as the final film in the 40-year saga received a standing ovation from the audience.
Footage of the standing ovation, and Ford’s emotional response to it, was posted to Twitter soon after the film’s premiere. In the footage, Ford can be seen tearfully waving at fans as he takes in the scene, which must be a full-circle moment after so much time playing the character.
Unlike the previous entries in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will not be directed by Steven Spielberg – though the director recently gave praise to director James Mangold, who’s helming the fifth installment. Also set to star in the film is Phoebe Waller Bridge (of Fleabag fame) as Helena, Indy’s goddaughter and fellow archeologist. The antagonist of the piece is Mads Mikkelsen’s Jurgen Voller – a former Nazi that’s seeking the film’s titular device in order to alter destiny itself.
Ford first played Indiana Jones in 1981 in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Three sequels followed over subsequent decades, with each film being received to differing critical receptions. The previous film in the saga, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released back in 2008 to generally poor reviews, so hearing about the standing ovation might be a relief to fans of the franchise – and may point to an emotional ending on the horizon.
