The Internet’s Convinced Captain Marvel Will Be The MCU’s First Openly Gay Hero

Joe and Anthony Russo sent the internet into a tailspin this week by revealing that not only will there soon be a gay superhero in the MCU, but that it’ll be someone who we’re already familiar with. Of course, they wouldn’t say who exactly it’d be, but they strongly suggested that this mysterious individual is one of the already established heroes and that they’ll soon come out as gay.

Obviously, this has led to a whole bunch of fan theories and speculation about who the directors are referring to, and while a lot of people would assume it’s Valkyrie, a good portion of the internet actually thinks it might be Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, and over at ScreenGeek, they’ve put together a pretty compelling case for why that is.

First up, they point our attention to comments from the actress herself, who’s been making a big deal about diversity in the MCU for a while now. Just recently, in fact, she said the following:

“I’m happy to be on the forefront of the normalization of this type of content and to prove once again that representation matters. Diverse storytelling matters, the female experience matters, and these are markers.

So it’s something I’ve always known and I think a lot of people always knew, but this is just normalizing. I don’t understand how you could think that a certain type of person isn’t allowed to be a superhero. So to me it’s like, we gotta move faster. But I’m always wanting to move faster with this stuff.”

What’s also interesting is that as ScreenGeek points out, a lot of people already thought Carol may’ve been gay back when they saw Captain Marvel, as evidenced by these Tweets:

Even Brie Larson herself has fueled the fire on the matter, Tweeting the following not too long ago:

And then, of course, there’s Carol’s new look in Avengers: Endgame, which has added even more proof to the internet’s argument that the hero is going to come out as gay.

As you can see, the internet puts forth a pretty compelling case for why Captain Marvel will be the gay hero that the Russo brothers are referring to, but if you’ve got any ideas of your own for who else it could be, be sure to let us know in the usual place down below.
