Roundtable Interview With Kristen Wiig On Despicable Me 2

Kristen Wiig, a name synonymous with comedy. A name that up until a few years ago, wasn't all that well known. Truth be told, it wasn't until 2011 that Wiig really broke out, thanks to the mega-successful Bridesmaids. Yes, she had a long list of respectable credits before that but after Paul Feig's hilarious ensemble comedy, Wiig became an A-list talent and now, she's hotter than ever.

You’re a very brave actress, I love your wacky characters and just how far you’ll go. Do you think you’ve reached the top of your wacky point yet or will you go further?

Kristen Wiig: God, I hope I haven’t reached the top yet. [laughs] Now that I’m not on SNL, I guess the chance to find those crazy characters won’t come around that much. On SNL it was a weekly opportunity to be fearless and find all those different voices and people. Doing an animated movie is the next best thing though because you can be big and broad and use different voices. I hope I can continue to find more of those wacky roles though because I really enjoy it.

Aside from the Minions, the other big part of this film is the music. How did you feel about the songs that they used?

Kristen Wiig: I loved the music. I always pay attention to music in films. The music in this movie is so good. I think it was such a smart choice to have Pharrell do it. It kind of sets a different tone, which I think is great. How do you not like Pharrell? [laughs]

Tell us a bit about your upcoming projects.

Kristen Wiig: Well, Anchorman: The Legend Continues and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty come out in December and Girl Most Likely will release in July. And then I did two really small films, Hateship, Loveship and Skeleton Twins, which hopefully will be doing the rounds at the festival.

You seem very reserved and very proper, how do you allow yourself to just let loose in front of the camera and then just shut everything down and become yourself again.

Kristen Wiig: I think a lot of people assume that you are the personality that they see you as on screen. When I start working, you just have to kind of separate who you are from what you’re doing in front of the camera. I wouldn’t say I’m reserved in real life though. Maybe in a setting like this just because I’m talking about myself and you’re writing everything down that I say. [laughs] So it is a little strange. When I’m with my friends I’m a bit more relaxed. But yeah, people just assume that you’re kind of the same way you are as they see you on screen.

On Anchorman: The Legend Continues, you get to work with a ton of very funny people. What’s that experience like?

Kristen Wiig: Anchorman is one of my favorite films and I love all of those guys. It’s been great. On my first day, all the lead actors were there in their costumes and I kind of geeked out for a minute. I couldn’t believe I was actually there. It was very surreal. The movie is pretty crazy though, it’s like the first one. It’s a bit all over the place.  If you liked the first one then you’ll like this one.

That concludes our interview but we’d like to thank Kristen for her time. Be sure to check out Despicable Me 2, when it hits theatres this week.
