Roundtable Interview With Olga Kurylenko On Oblivion

Olga Kurylenko may not be an A-list talent just yet, but she's definitely starting to prove herself amongst the Hollywood elite. After earning a role as the Bond girl in Quantum of Solace, she went onto grab roles in To The Wonder, Seven Psychopaths and Centurion. Now, with serious buzz surrounding her name and many in the industry starting to sit up and take notice of the Ukrainian born actress, her latest film, Oblivion, is about to make its way into theatres.

We Got This Covered: What do you this is the biggest misconception about Hollywood that Europeans have?

Olga Kurylenko: I don’t know. But to me, I approach a small budget, artsy, European movie the same way as a big commercial Hollywood movie. That’s the most important thing. Hollywood usually represents this big dream in people’s minds but to me, it’s just hard work.

We Got This Covered: The film has an interesting score. Can you talk about watching a film for the first time with the music added in?

Olga Kurylenko: The music here is wonderful. It’s so touching and at some point, in Dublin, the music was playing so loud on the red carpet that I almost cried. It’s so emotional. Especially here, with  Oblivion, it shows you that music is such an important part of a movie because it can just bring you to so many emotions. It evokes so many memories and feelings in us. It’s so important. This music is quite fabulous though, it fits perfectly in the movie.

We Got This Covered: Can you tell us about working with Terrence Malick on To The Wonder.

Olga Kurylenko: Well, it was very different. It couldn’t be any further apart from Oblivion. In Malick’s film, there was no script. Here, the script is very detailed and precise. The way Malick worked with us, he never rehearsed. Here, we rehearsed a lot, we had to. You couldn’t just step on set and improvise, it was too technical of a movie. Malick just throws actors in. The way I built my character in To The Wonder was just by talking to Terrence all the time. We just spoke and spoke and spoke. I had a bit of homework to do too, he made me read three Russian novels.

We Got This Covered: I know you’ve done some action before but this is probably your most physical role. Did you have to do any training before you started filming?

Olga Kurylenko: It actually wasn’t the most physically demanding role I’ve ever had. Quantum of Solace was harder on me. For me physically, the most intense character I’ve ever played was the one in Bond, but this is definitely second. Bond prepared me for this role though, I knew how to handle a lot of the action here thanks to what I learnt on the set of Quantum of Solace.

That concludes our interview but we’d like to thank Olga very much for talking with us. Be sure to check out Oblivion when it hits theatres this Friday.
