Who Are The X-Force?
Back in the ’90s, team books were everything. Fans wanted to see all their favorite heroes and villains band together for epic battles and storylines. Having worked on New Mutants for a while, Liefeld wanted to freshen things up a bit, so he created the X-Force, a revamped version of the New Mutants. The group made its “official” debut in New Mutants #100 in April 1991 and soon received its own eponymous series.
The original version of the team featured Cable as its leader, along with Boom Boom, Cannonball, Feral, Shatterstar, and Warpath in the ranks. It was a spinoff of the X-Men; however, the X-Force was far more aggressive towards their enemies than Professor Xavier’s faction.
In an interview with Fandango, Liefeld explained his reasons for creating this supergroup in the first place:
“You know, back when I created X-Force, as a fan I was kind of tired with the X-Men. They had become what I would say kind of a mopey group. A mopey bunch of people. They were always drowned in their own sorrows, and I like action – I like kick-ass characters – so when I transformed [New Mutants] and turned it into X-Force, I think each of the characters, from Cable to Domino to Deadpool, are a kick-ass group of badass mutants that don’t take any s***. They knock down your wall. They ask questions later. They are very much a more aggressive arm of the X-Men.”
By the looks of it, we’ll be receiving a slightly altered version of the X-Force’s origin in Deadpool 2, as well as a selection of mutants from different iterations of the team over the years. From what we know, the big screen version of the team will initially feature Deadpool, Domino, Bedlam, Shatterstar, Zeitgeist, Peter and other unnamed heroes. Don’t bet against this changing by the end of the flick, though, and Cable becoming a part of it, too.
