J.K. Simmons landed his second iconic superhero movie role last November when the actor most well known to fans as J. Jonah Jameson in the original Spider-Man films joined the DC universe in Justice League, playing Batman’s pal on the police force, Commissioner Gordon.
As the franchise is clearly undergoing some major restructuring since the team-up movie fell way short of expectations, we’re not sure if or when he’ll turn up as Gordon again. But Simmons seems confident about his chances of reprising the role.
While speaking with Den of Geek, the topic of his DC job came up and the actor reiterated that he’s contracted for more appearances. Though he is hoping to get the chance to play the part again, he just doesn’t know what film it could happen in at the moment.
“I hope to do more Gordon and, on paper, I’m committed to doing more Gordon. It’s just a question of which film it’ll be in, whether it’s The Batman or another Justice League, or another DC universe film when we will see Gordon again. But I’m optimistic that that will happen again.”
So, where could we see Jim Gordon next? Well, honestly, there doesn’t seem to be any sort of push to do another Justice League movie at WB, so we can rule that out for now. The Batman is the most obvious next choice, but that’s still a few years away, as writer/director Matt Reeves is taking his sweet time developing it.
In the meantime, a few other Gotham-based films are coming, such as Birds of Prey. We haven’t heard of Gordon showing up in that one, but we keep hearing about a potential Batgirl standalone, so Simmons could be in with a shot of appearing there. After all, Barbara Gordon is the commissioner’s daughter.
