James Gunn confirms who an MCU and DC veteran is playing in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

He's sort of rippled like Drax.

Next Friday, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 film will release and see the titular team face the music before their story ends. It features some returning actors, some old ones in new roles, and now James Gunn has revealed what Nathan Fillion is doing in the latter.

The film’s director and DCU co-leader as of this story’s filing posted the above images on Twitter earlier today. In the piece, it appears the 52-year-old will be a sentry of sorts for the High Evolutionary scientist antagonist who works in biology and tries to create hybrid entities in order to develop one “special race,” and his character does not appear to be present in Marvel’s comics. There is a character named Karn he sort of resembles (so this could be an homage), and, while fans are mostly excited for the coming film, several are remembering Fillion’s past DC efforts and say his animated Lantern work shows he should be the next.

For those unaware, Fillion has played Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in various direct-to-video animated DC projects since 2011. He was also in the first Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 as the voice of a blue alien prisoner, and has been in Marvel work like M.O.D.O.K. as Wonder Man (who he appeared to be set to play in live-action after posters with him as the character were an easter egg in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but this has since been changed) and a different user says he is good no matter the role’s size.

Of course, Fillion famously played The Detachable Kid in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and did not last through that film (or so it would seem) and, as he is not one of the heroes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it appears anything can happen. For now, fans and others will just have to wait and see. In the story, the group will go on a dangerous mission which could see them dissolve if they fail and, with this in mind, it could be the case anyone is expendable, even Chris Pratt with his radiating charm and high likability.
