At this point, James Gunn must be hoping to hope itself that Twitter just disappears from the internet one day and takes its legion fan-made DC Universe leak accounts with it, otherwise he’s going to spend just as much time debunking nonsense as he will writing the actual projects themselves.
While we wouldn’t blame him if this particular repetitiveness drove him to marked animosity, Gunn is instead making the best of a stupid situation by turning his crusade against baloney rumors into his own personal trivia hour, and the tidbit he shared recently is all sorts of fun.
After negating a rumor from the DCU Leaks Twitter account (which Gunn would further note as one of the least reliable sources out there, for good measure) which claimed that Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man: No Way Home) had been cast in Superman: Legacy, the filmmaker took the opportunity to divulge his love for the actor, and reflected fondly on their time together while making The Specials. For those of you unfamiliar with that title, strap in.
The Specials is a 2000 superhero movie and Gunn’s second-ever foray into filmmaking, having written the script, served as an associate producer and – as weird as it sounds now – starred in it. The tale follows a team of superheroes on their day off, trading in action for a simple, run-of-the-mill look at the simpler side of their lives.
Gunn plays Minute Man, who has the ability to shrink himself and who gets quite annoyed that people keep mispronouncing his name. He plays the brother of Thomas Haden Church’s The Strobe, the team’s egotistical leader who can shoot lasers from his hands. Gunn’s real-life brother, Sean Gunn, also appears in the film as Doug, a shapeshifting alien orphan.
So there you have it, folks; we officially live in a world where the guy who wrote The Specials is in charge of spearheading one of the most anticipated superhero reboots of our time, proving once and for all that the universe can write a better comedy than any of us ever could.
