Having confirmed the first of the many stories that won’t have any sort of bearing whatsoever on Superman: Legacy, James Gunn may have offered a hint as to some of the tales that will.
A lifelong fan of the character, the filmmaker has walked back fairly spectacularly on his comments from several years back when he claimed he wasn’t interested in tackling the Big Blue Boy Scout on the big screen, having been offered any property of his choosing when he first jumped ship from Marvel to DC after being fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Not only is he now the co-CEO of the entire studio, but he’s also penning the screenplay for Superman: Legacy, and is widely rumored to be directing the project as well. Dropping another potential clue, Gunn took to Twitter to share an uplifting image that positively screams “up, up, and away,”
The image is from the cover of Action Comics issue 1050, which takes place after the Dark Crisis event. Superman is back on earth, with Clark Kent reunited with Lois Lane and son Jon, but Lex Luthor inevitably ends up crashing the party by stealing something that’s very personal to Kal-El, forcing him to battle his greatest adversary in an effort to reclaim it.
Then again, there’s a chance Gunn is simply sharing some iconic panels from days gone by, of which the cover absolutely fits. Either way, any lingering doubts over his suitability for helming Superman: Legacy should eventually subside if he keeps dropping knowledge bombs on fans like this one.
