Orchestrating the latest overhaul for a franchise that’s already a decade into its run is no easy task, but James Gunn isn’t one to shirk away from taking on some extra responsibilities as the co-CEO of DC Studios.
As if running an entire shared universe of interconnect film and television stories wasn’t enough, the filmmaker and executive is also deep into pre-production on Superman: Legacy, the launchpad for the saga’s brave new era that he’s also writing and directing. Casting is underway, but it’s another age-old debate revolving around the Man of Steel that the world needs an answer for.
Few characters – or figures in general across all of history – have created such intense debate around their underwear as Kal-El, the Last Son of Krypton, with Zack Snyder making the bold decision to have Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent keep them on the inside. Will Gunn follow suit? He was asked, and he offered a response, but suffice to say there’s been no definitive settlement on the pantaloons situation as of yet.
Based on the little we do know about Superman: Legacy so far, it would be reasonable to expect Gunn’s title hero to proudly sport their undies externally. After all, he’s been giving off the impression that there’s going to be a classic feel to the in-development blockbuster, so it stands to reason that approach would also extend to the costume.
Then again, if his chosen lead actor looks ridiculous with the garish red garments on the outside, then it could be back to the drawing board. Either way, there’s going to be a reaction wherever he lands, because he can’t do anything without splitting the DCU fandom in two.
