James Gunn proves himself a good company man by naming his favorite movie of the year

James Gunn showed where his allegiance lies.

It’s been a few months since James Gunn started his job at Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios, and after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – which presumably ended his Marvel Studios career – the director showed where his allegiances lie, especially when it came to upcoming releases.

Gunn was asked on Twitter which film that was released in 2023 so far has been his favorite, and out of all the horror, superhero, and dramas that came out in both theaters and streaming services, Gunn gave one simple answer that might have caught people off guard. It was The Flash, which is interesting considering that the film only came out through limited advanced early screenings.

There is one major reason why he didn’t mention Guardians of the Galaxy as his number one pick, and no, it has nothing to do with his obligations in DC. He was later asked to choose between The Flash and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, considering that it too came out this year. Gunn revealed that he couldn’t “judge his own film” since it’s like choosing your own child over something else.

The Flash recently had a limited theatrical run in a handful of AMC theaters and people gave comments that were similar to the ones said back in CinemaCon. People claimed that this upcoming DC blockbuster is one of the best superhero movies they’ve seen in years, and praised Ezra Miller’s performance of playing two versions of himself.

If you want to understand why Gunn liked The Flash outside of his allegiance with DC studios, the film will dash its way to theaters on June 16, 2023.
