James Gunn responds to claims YouTubers rejected DCU directing gig: ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about’

It's news to him, let alone us.

Superhero film fans were shocked this week when YouTubers-turned-filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou — better known as streaming duo RackaRacka — claimed they’d rejected the opportunity to direct a DC movie. James Gunn‘s rebooted franchise is likely looking for fresh talent to helm its upcoming slew of projects, so it was surprising to hear that the Philippou brothers would turn down the gig (although they’re not the only ones).

Gunn himself has now weighed into the conversation, however, and it turns out he’s even more in the dark than we are. In response to a fan quizzing the writer/director/producer on what project the Philippous were up for, Gunn admitted: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Once presented with a write-up of the story, Gunn then speculated on what the duo — who have just broken onto the indie horror scene with their acclaimed directorial debut Talk to Me — were referring to. He imagines that they must’ve turned down the opportunity to pitch a project rather than being handed the keys to something already in pre-production.

Gunn’s comments certainly fly in the face of what RackaRacka themselves said about what transpired. “They offered us a project but we decided not to go forward at the moment, we wanted to focus on our original material for the time being,” is how the Australian natives — who are known for their pranks videos, mature content, and for spawning memes — put it.

Apparently, yet another benefit of James Gunn being Extremely Online is that he gets to find out what’s going on within his own studio from the fans. Don’t let anybody tell you scrolling Twitter isn’t working.
