James Gunn has made his name as one of the top directors in Hollywood, in large part due to the success of the two Guardians of the Galaxy films, which he directed and wrote.

Despite his personal success, however, Gunn said he does not really dig many superhero movies anymore, and that his feelings toward the genre prompted him to mix in elements from war films to his upcoming film, The Suicide Squad.

“They’re mostly boring to me right now! [Laughs],” Gunn told SFX Magazine. “I loved them at the beginning and there are still people trying to do different things [with them], so it’s not a 100 percent rule, but a lot of them are boring.”

Gunn has extensive experience with the genre, starting back at the turn of the century, when The Specials, a superhero comedy film he wrote and starred in, was released. He also wrote and directed Super, a superhero comedy starring Rainn Wilson, before making arguably his biggest mark on the genre with Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014.

The two Guardians movies grossed a combined more than $1.5 billion at the box office and have been lauded by fans and critics alike as some of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since then, Gunn has directed, wrote, or produced mostly superhero movies, including Brightburn, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. In addition to the upcoming The Suicide Squad, Gunn is directing and writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will begin filming in late 2021. He also served as executive producer of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set for a release in May 2022.

James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad will make its theatrical release on July 30 in the United Kingdom and Aug. 5 in the United States. The film will be available on the HBO Max streaming service for one month after its release.
