Even though he’s been rehired by Marvel to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn’s priority is still to helm The Suicide Squad for DC. We’ve been told to expect less of a sequel to the 2016 movie from David Ayer and more of a “total reboot,” but that said, a few cast members from the first cinematic outing of Task Force X will return. For example, Jai Courtney has confirmed he’s coming back as Captain Boomerang.
Given that, fans are hoping Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will make a return, too. As the Joker’s ex was arguably the best part of the last film and Robbie is set to reprise the role in Birds of Prey, you’d expect Warner Bros. to be keen to bring her back for the sequel – sorry, reboot – but to date we haven’t heard any official news on that front. And though the situation hasn’t yet changed in that regard, Gunn may have hinted that we can expect more of Harley with an innocent-looking Instagram story.
Over the weekend, the filmmaker updated his account to share a piece of fan art featuring a Chibi-style Harley Quinn. Fans will note that the super-cute artwork depicts the anti-heroine in her outfit from 2016’s Suicide Squad, which has obviously kicked speculation into overdrive.
What do we make of this, though? Well, to begin with, as the current custodian of the Suicide Squad franchise, Gunn might’ve simply decided to share some of the talented fan art out there. However, the director has always enjoyed teasing his followers about his work on social media and as such, this post could be alluding to the fact that Robbie is joining the cast.
Speaking of which, Viola Davis is also due to reprise her role as Amanda Waller, while Dave Bautista is rumored to be in the running for the part of Peacemaker. Joel Kinnaman, meanwhile, will not return as Rick Flag.
The Suicide Squad is set to begin filming later this year before hitting theaters on August 6th, 2021. And as soon as we hear anything more on the casting front, we’ll be sure to let you know.
