Suicide Squad may have been one of the messiest comic book movies in some time, with a current score of 25% on Rotten Tomatoes and most fans writing it off as a missed opportunity to do something really special. Given that it pulled in almost $750 million at the worldwide box office though, we’re inclined to believe that everyone and their mother still saw it in theatres. Or at least, almost everyone.
In a new interview with Syfy Wire to promote his latest effort, Blade Runner 2049, Jared Leto revealed that he actually hasn’t watched Suicide Squad yet.
“No, I never saw it,” he said. “I just think with watching your own films, it can be too self-conscious of a process. You either like what you did and you’re prone to repeat it, or you didn’t like it, and it can make you self-conscious. I’m not sure how much win there is for me. But I read the scripts, so I know what’s going to happen.”
Actors refusing to watch their own work is nothing new, and given all the controversy surrounding Leto’s role as the Joker, it’s not too surprising that he didn’t have any interest in re-visiting the movie. Not to mention that he’s also voiced his opinion in the past about how unhappy he was that Warner Bros. cut so much of Mr. J out of the film. So, all things considered, it makes sense that he’d want to keep his distance from the project.
Then again, his feelings towards it can’t be too bad, as he’s already signed on for both Suicide Squad 2 and a Joker vs. Harley Quinn spinoff. While details on both of those are scarce at this early stage, the actor will definitely return to the role and we’re hopeful that the studio handles the character a bit better the next time around.
