Jason Momoa’s ‘Minecraft’ movie that absolutely nobody has ever asked for locks down a date

Prepare to see 'Minecraft' on the big screen fairly soon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Minecraft film is scheduled to come out in 2025, the same year Warner Bros. and DC will launch James Gunn’s DCU reboot with Superman Legacy. At the moment, Momoa is the only actor listed in the film’s cast list, with Minecraft’s creator Markus Pearson (aka Notch) listed in the film’s writing credits. It’s currently unknown what role the DC actor will be playing.

On IMDB, there is another title for the Minecraft movie, titled “Cave Game.” Information about the film’s story is also listed online, stating that a group of adventurers was sent out to stop the Ender Dragon’s path of destruction. It also hinted that the movie will have a female lead character who will take charge and lead the fight.

“The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.”

The Minecraft movie has been in development since 2012 after Mojang received multiple offers from a variety of Hollywood producers to translate this game onto screen. Deadline reported in 2014 that Pearson was in talks with Warner Bros. Pictures in regards to acquiring the film rights to the popular video game title. Warner Bros. also managed to get Roy Lee, the producer for The Lego Movie and How To Train Your Dragon, to be involved in the project.

At the time, the plan was to give this cube-shaped video game the live-action treatment rather than for it to be animated, and it seems that’s still the direction the film is going for according to Variety.

Minecraft is a popular video game that was first made public in 2009 and had its official release on November 2011. The game sits on top of the most-sold games of all time, with over 238 million copies purchased since launch. Minecraft is a sandbox adventure game where players have free reign to do whatever they want like build houses and towns, fight monsters, or go exploring.

The Minecraft movie is scheduled to come out on April 4, 2025.
