Jason Reitman To Direct Ghostbusters 3, Will Arrive In 2020

After Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters failed to hit it big at the box office and only really served to inspire angry online commenters, the chances of a sequel were quickly put to bed. So while we probably won’t be seeing Melissa McCarthy and the team back in theaters again, it seems as if the classic line-up might be making a return instead for the long-awaited Ghostbusters 3.

The threequel’s been stuck in development hell for a while now, but it sounds as if things are finally about to get off the ground, with Jason Reitman set to helm the pic. The director – who’s the son of Ivan Reitman – spoke to Entertainment Weekly recently and confirmed as much, saying the following:

I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ’80s happened in the ’80s, and this is set in the present day.

This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet.”

With production set to begin in the summer, we should learn more about the project soon, including who’ll star in it. Though it technically will be Ghostbusters 3, there’s no word yet on if any of the original cast members will return. Although, given that Reitman says it’s not a reboot, we imagine that we’ll be seeing some familiar faces show up.

True, THR tells us that the main characters will be four teens (two boys, two girls), which likely means that they’ll take over as the new faces of the franchise moving forward, but it’s likely that the old gang will still be around just to pass the torch, so to speak. Then again, without any further details, it’s hard to say exactly what shape Ghostbusters 3 will take, but we can’t imagine they’d make the movie and not allow any of the original cast to at least cameo, right?

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how the project develops, but this news is sure to please fans and as more updates on the film arise, we’ll certainly let you know.
