Despite the poor reception that The Bourne Legacy received, Universal is going ahead with a fifth film in the franchise and once again, Jeremy Renner will star in the lead role, according to Deadline. Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) will take on writing duties but as of yet, no plot details have been released.
In fact, nothing at all has really been released, aside from Renner and Peckham’s involvement. We’re still unsure of whether or not Tony Gilroy, who directed Legacy, will return.
Personally, I thought The Bourne Legacy was pretty terrible. I wouldn’t blame it on Renner, but the film came nowhere close to being as exciting and enjoyable as the previous three. That being said, it took in $276 million worldwide and it was just a matter of time before the wheels got moving on this one.
Admittedly, I thought Renner made for a good action hero and the problems with the film didn’t necessarily lie in his performance. With a new director behind the camera, perhaps the fifth instalment could improve upon its predecessor. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
