Seven years ago, moviegoers welcomed Saw 3D – otherwise known as The Final Chapter – as the last hurrah for Lionsgate’s iconic horror franchise. But as time wore on, James Wan and other creatives involved in the stomach-churning series started to hint that Saw 3D signaled a temporary hiatus, rather than a definitive conclusion.

Fast forward to now and we stand on the verge of Saw: Legacy, Michael and Peter Spierig’s franchise revival that’s set to reinvent the horror saga with a different storyline and new cast of characters – two of which will be played by Laura Vandervoort and Hannah Anderson. Legacy won’t forget its roots, though. The folks over at Bloody Disgusting have unearthed the first plot details for Lionsgate’s prequel-sequel (see below) which reveal that, yes, Tobin Bell’s John Kramer (AKA Jigsaw) will indeed return – either that, or a sadistic apprentice is upholding Jigsaw’s signature MO.

It should be noted that neither Costas Mandylor nor Cary Elwes are expected to reprise for Saw: Legacy, which lends weight to Legacy resurrecting Kramer in one form or another. What we do know for sure is that Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger are the brains behind the script.

“Saw: Legacy will begin with bodies turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?”

Looks like Saw: Legacy will herald the return of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw Killer after all. October 27th is the date for your diaries, at which point Michael and Peter Spierig’s horror revival will be going up against God Particle, Bad Robot and Julius Onah’s sci-fi thriller that is reportedly Cloverfield 3 in disguise.
