Terminator: Genisys wrapped back in August. Don’t get excited just yet – we’ve still got an entire year until it’s released in theatres. That being said, we all know what the pre-release marketing and hype for anticipated franchises is like. Trailers, synopses, images, posters – and spread throughout those mediums, more spoilers than you can shake a stick at. Except, for the time-traveling cyborg sequel, there’s not been any of that. Not a sniff. The most ‘news’ we’ve had to go on has involved the film’s subtitle change from Genesis to Genisys, a move met with much derision.
Despite the lack of info, Coming Soon spoke with the brilliant JK Simmons recently about his performance in Whiplash. And of course, they snuck in a few questions about his part in the Terminator reboot, which prompted a very excited response from the actor:
“It’s a gigantic movie and that was such a surprise when they sent that to me and asked me to do it. I thought ‘Well, obviously it’s a gigantic movie and on that level, it’s something most actors would want to be a part of, but is it just going to be the formulaic yadda-yadda-yadda then cut to the stuff blowing up?’ But I found the script to be really much more intelligent and fun and funny and well-rounded and heart-felt. It’s a love story. It’s a really interesting script. They got great actors. I wrapped that in August, so that was another movie that ended up being really satisfying on all levels. I have a much smaller part in that but it was really a fun thing to be a part of.”
Sounds like a continuation of the similar romantic tone that kickstarted the first flick back in 1984. If you really think about it, if it weren’t for Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese’s bedroom antics, we’d have no John Connor, and no franchise. Their budding love story was nicely complemented by the time travel element. It rendered a new element of nostalgia into the story thanks to the paradoxical narrative.
The actor was then asked about who he spent time with on set, revealing a wee bit about who he filmed scenes with:
“Yeah, most of my stuff was with Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke and Arnold was very involved or rather I was involved in a fair amount of stuff with Arnold. I spent very little time actually with Jason Clarke, but yeah I got to work with all four of the leads of the film and from the table read on, I was just favorably impressed by everybody’s work. Also everybody’s attitude and what they brought to work with them every day and how there was no BS and diva tantrums. It was a good experience overall.”
Understandably, Simmons is keeping his cards close to his chest. Like most of the cast, it’s probable that he’s signed a confidentiality agreement which means: he can’t dish the dirt on the movie for us eager fans. Still, it’s good to hear about the on set vibe, which hopefully indicates we’re in store for a much better outing than Salvation.
Terminator: Genisys opens on July 1st, 2015.
