Johnny Depp may be one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, but he hasn’t been producing many quality films lately. What with The Lone Ranger, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows and The Rum Diary all staining his resume, the actor hasn’t been too hot these days. Still, with huge sequels like Alice in Wonderland 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean 5 on the horizon, his next few paycheques will no doubt be juicy ones.
Today, Depp has announced his next project. He’ll re-team with David Koepp, his director from Secret Window, for a comedy crime flick called Mortdecai. Based on the Kyril Bonfiglioli novel, the story follows an “art dealer/rogue who somehow gets mixed up in a plot involving Nazi gold, the Russians, the MI5 and more.”
While I do like Johnny Depp, I think that he’s been choosing some pretty terrible roles lately. He was the worst part of The Lone Ranger and films like The Tourist and Dark Shadows were just so incredibly bad. That being said, with projects like Wally Pfister’s Transcendence and Into The Woods coming up in the near future, things may be looking up for the actor. Hopefully Mortdecai will prove to be a winner for Depp, as the actor definitely needs a string of good hits at this point in his career.
Depp hopes to shoot Mortdecai in October, in between Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods and Pirates of the Caribbean 5. We’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
Tell us, what do you think of Johnny Depp re-teaming with David Koepp for Mortdecai? Will it be a good role for the actor? Do you agree that he really needs another hit sometime soon? Let us know in the comments below.
