In the second piece of “I bet you weren’t expecting this” news today, it’s being reported that Johnny Depp has a role in Kevin Smith’s upcoming horror film, Tusk. Justin Long is the one who let the cat out of the bag here, stating that the A-list actor will play a supporting character in what’s being described as an “offbeat monster movie.”
While Smith has hinted on Twitter that he bagged a major star for a smaller role in the film, we had no idea that he was referring to Depp. Honestly, I don’t think anyone could have predicted this. That being said, it’s definitely a welcome surprise. The bizarre story here seems like it will fit perfectly into the actor’s wheelhouse, as Tusk will follow a man who has an unhealthy obsession with walruses and tries to create a walrus-human hybrid.
As for who Depp will play, apparently he’ll take on the role of a French-Canadian investigator named Guy Lapointe, who is in charge of looking into the odd events that occur in the film. No word yet on how big the part will be, but it sounds like it’s going to be more than just a quick cameo.
Though Depp’s involvement hasn’t been officially confirmed just yet by distributor A24 or Smith himself, it makes sense. Given that Long stars in the film, I imagine that he knows what he’s talking about. Furthermore, Smith and Depp are real-life friends, having worked together on charity events and whatnot. So really, there’s no reason to doubt this.
