Jon M. Chu Will Return For G.I. Joe 3

No one really liked G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and I don't think its sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, fared much better. But both films did make money and in Hollywood, money means more, more films in a franchise, no matter how crummy it may be. So yes, we're getting a G.I. Joe 3 and today we're hearing that Jon M. Chu, who directed the second instalment, is returning to helm the third film.

No one really liked G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and I don’t think its sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, fared much better. But both films did make money and in Hollywood, money means more, more films in a franchise, no matter how crummy it may be. So yes, we’re getting a G.I. Joe 3 and today we’re hearing that Jon M. Chu, who directed the second installment, is returning to helm the third film.

Casting all cynicism aside, I will say that Chu did do an alright job with G.I. Joe: Retaliation and did successfully re-tool the series. Retaliation wasn’t a great film by any means, but it was an improvement compared to its predecessor and it did feature some pretty fun action scenes.

At the end of the day it’s nothing more than a mindless popcorn flick but hey, there is definitely a market for that kind of thing. After all, Retaliation pulled in $365 million worldwide. So there are obviously people out there who will pay for this type of film.

No word yet on who will return to star but you can bet that Dwayne Johnson will be on board, as he was the best part about G.I. Joe: Retaliation. As for writers, Paramount apparently has four people on their shortlist and will be meeting with the candidates over the coming weeks.

We’ll keep you posted when we hear more but for now, tell us, do you care about a third G.I. Joe film? If you do, are you happy to see Jon M. Chu back behind the camera? Let us know in the comments below.
