Director Jon M. Chu hasn’t even wrapped his latest film, GI Joe: Retaliation, due to unexpected reshoots, but already the young director is being tied to another high-profile action franchise long awaiting a proper reboot. Deadline is reporting Mr. Chu has entered talks to resurrect He-Man in a brand new Masters of the Universe film, penned by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch.
He-Man is well known for his battles with Skeletor every Saturday morning in the 1980’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon, but don’t forget a big screen adaptation was attempted once before.  Swedish superstar Dolph Lundgren played the blonde hero while battling a Skeletor played by Frank Langella for the 1987 film Masters of the Universe, which bombed mightily at the box office.
Considering G.I. Joe: Retaliation is Chu’s first venture into the action genre, his choreography influenced background could be utilized to produce some pretty mesmerizing fight sequences. Known for films like Step Up 3D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, we’ll see if Jon can translate his lavish dance numbers into some equally flowing fight sequences featuring the same number of intricate steps.
As for seeing Jon M. Chu direct a Masters of the Universe film, the jury is still out until we get a true sense of his handle on action films. If Sony is jumping on the director’s bandwagon though for an already dicey property, surely they have seen footage impressive enough to spark such talks.
Do you He-Man fans think such a directorial choice could bring excitement to a new Masters of the Universe film?
