Jon Favreau Addresses The Possibility Of An Iron Man 4

With with Avengers: Endgame both wrapping up the story that began with that movie and featuring the tragic death of Tony Stark himself, Marvel fans have been thinking a lot about 2008's Iron Man lately, which is responsible for kicking off the MCU just over a decade ago. The IM trilogy was hugely successful from '08-'13, and though Robert Downey Jr. continued to play the character in team-up movies, an Iron Man 4 never materialized.

With Stark now gone, there could be the opportunity to reboot the franchise with a different person in the red and gold armor. And if that were to happen, you can bet director Jon Favreau would be involved. That being said, although he’s continued to be a part of the franchise in his role as Happy Hogan, the filmmaker told ComicBook.com that there are currently no plans for a fourth Iron Man.

“We haven’t talked about four. I’ve talked to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] about it to see what they’re up to, but we definitely love working together and we love these characters. We talk about what it would be, and we always joke about the freak storyline which is the Happy Hogan storyline when he turns into a Hulk-like character. We joke about that. No plans, as of yet.”

Instead of an Iron Man 4, it looks like Spider-Man: Far From Home will be the movie responsible for exploring the legacy of Tony Stark. Monday’s second trailer focused on Peter Parker’s grief at the loss of his mentor with other characters labelling him as “the new Iron Man.” Favreau will also reprise as Happy for the sequel, following on from his supporting role in Spider-Man: Homecoming and recent appearance in Endgame

Spidey’s unlikely to accept the mantle of the next Iron Man, but we wouldn’t rule out the chances of another legacy character doing so. Tony’s daughter Morgan Stark may grow up and take over from her mom and dad, while the rumored Young Avengers movie will presumably feature Iron Lad, if it’s matching the line-up from the comics.
