The highest profile character currently needing to be cast is without a doubt Batman. Speculation is rampant across the web about just who will don the cape and cowl in Batman Vs. Superman come 2015. There was recently word that Warner Bros. is looking to cast an older actor in the role, and now the current shortlist of actors in consideration has hit the web.

While it’s still early in the casting process, the names that are listed reveal quite a bit about what Zack Snyder is seeking in his Dark Knight. It appears he’s looking to cast an older, more rugged Batman as the story will start with Batman as an established hero, as opposed to doing another origin story.

Multiple sources are reporting that the current top choice is Josh Brolin. The other names on the list are Ryan Gosling, Joe Manganiello, Richard Armitage, Matthew Goode, and Max Martini. In terms of going with an older Dark Knight, Gosling is by far the youngest on that list at 32, and the oldest is the 45-year-old Brolin. The rest clock in between 35 and 43.

I can’t say I have any complaints with Brolin. He’s succeeded in some very diverse roles, and it’s hard to think of a performance where he disappointed. He isn’t a name I would’ve picked before hearing he is in consideration, but I certainly won’t be upset if he ends up taking on the role.

In terms of the rest of the list, I really like Gosling, though he’d need some bulking up. Martini stands out as a very solid choice too. His performance in Pacific Rim was excellent, and he’s just the kind of gruff, weathered actor that an older Batman requires.
