In a statement that would probably cause a riot within the more distinguished film community, comedic innovator Judd Apatow criticized the Academy Awards, saying comedies have only won Oscars five times in the past “zillion years.”

Though he’s definitely right, he’s going to have a hard time convincing anyone that the Academy should establish a comedy category, especially now that ten films instead of five are now nominated for Best Picture.

The last true comedy to win the Best Picture Oscar was Annie Hall in 1977, though hybrids like Shakespeare in Love and American Beauty have won as well.

I think Apatow is just trying to get Bridesmaids a nod, which would be awesome. But what do you think?
