Jude Law Spills On His Captain Marvel Character And Joining The MCU

Prior to Captain Marvel, it seems Jude Law had been on Marvel’s radar for quite some time.

As MCU boss Kevin Feige tells Entertainment Weekly, the soon-to-be Hogwarts Headmaster is someone they’ve admired for years, and it was simply a matter of waiting for the right role to come up before welcoming Jude Law on board. And it’s seemingly an “extraordinary” part at that.

Neither Feige nor the film’s two directors – namely Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck – were willing to disclose the identity of Jude Law’s mystery figure (Mar-Vell, perhaps?), but as part of EW’s ongoing coverage, the man himself offered some insight into his character, whom he describes as a staunch member of the Kree family.

He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people. So he’s almost a devout warrior — unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational.

His Starforce leader soon becomes something of a mentor to the up-and-coming Carol Danvers, as her near-limitless power is only effective when tempered by a strong and steady mind.

Via EW:

These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control. That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.

By the time Captain Marvel begins, Brie Larson’s titular hero is already living on the Kree planet of Hala, where she’s been inducted into Starforce, a group of elite interstellar warriors and the last line of defense against the Skrulls.

For Jude Law, though, he believes now is the perfect time to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as [redacted]:

It just seemed like an interesting party to join in with at an interesting time in their ascendancy. That to me is an interesting playground to work in because suddenly you’ve got filmmakers who are looking at humor and script work and character, within an infrastructure that is obviously capable of creating enormous universes and worlds and special effects — while also not bogging down the creativity of the director.

Captain Marvel breaks new ground for Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut on March 8th.
