Jurassic World 3 May Bring Back Some Familiar Faces

When Jurassic World rebooted the Park franchise in 2015, it was always envisioned as the first installment in a trilogy, and that trilogy is due to come to completion in a couple of years' time. With Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hitting theaters last summer, production hasn't kicked off just yet on the third movie, but director Colin Trevorrow - who's been the architect of the series since World - has now teased what's to come.

Variety caught up with the filmmaker recently and asked him if Jurassic World 3 would be the last ever film in the franchise. Trevorrow said that it was too early to say, but did tease that the upcoming effort would act as a celebration of everything the Jurassic films have been up to this point.

“I’m kind of a one movie at a time kind of guy, so my eyes are on this one. And it’s a celebration of everything that has existed in the franchise up until now.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (which Trevorrow was originally due to work on, of course) is being billed as something similar, and is set to bring back some old faces we haven’t seen in a while. So, does that mean Jurassic World 3 could see Sam Neill and Laura Dern return to the franchise as their iconic characters? Trevorrow isn’t giving anything away just yet, but he isn’t denying it, either.

“I can confirm nothing. But nothing would make me happier than to be able to work with any of those people.”

Of the stars of the original 1993 classic, B.D. Wong returned as Henry Wu in both World films, while Jeff Goldblum provided a cameo as Ian Malcolm in Fallen Kingdom. That felt like it was teasing a bigger role for him in the sequel, so it sounds like a good bet he could reunite with Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler the next time around.

In any case, we’ll likely have to wait a while longer before we find out for sure, as Jurassic World 3 isn’t scheduled to roar into cinemas until June 11th, 2021.
