Speaking to MTV News at this year’s Star Wars Celebration, the producer was asked about the possibility of adapting this early period in the franchise timeline. While Kennedy was careful about giving away too much, she did mention that they “talk about that all the time,” before affirming, “Yes, we are developing something to look at.” She then stressed that right now, she has “no idea where things might fall.”

From the sound of things, a Knights of the Old Republic movie may still be a long way off from going into production, which only figures, seeing how the film franchise is expected to go on hiatus after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Still, it’s interesting how this new development lines up with a report from last month, which alleged that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working on a trilogy set during the Old Republic.

The report from Star Wars News Net likened the project to Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, and described it as an attempt to “open up the Star Wars timeline.” Then again, the site’s source also said that the trilogy’s first installment is expected to begin filming in the fall, which isn’t looking too likely at this point.

In any case, Kennedy still seems undecided on the future of the franchise beyond 2019. But before we worry too much about what’s next for the series, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to bring the current era to a close when the film hits theaters on December 20th.
