‘Keep your fingers crossed’: Idris Elba teases more ‘Luther’ on the horizon

An improvement on 'The Fallen Sun' would be more than welcome.

The Luther train apparently hasn’t stopped just yet, and after 13 years coming in and out of the spotlight, why would it? Luther: The Fallen Sun may have been a shaky point to last leave off from, but the Idris Elba-led crime drama mythos has packed enough of a unique punch over the years to keep this particular fire burning.

In a recent interview with Collider, Elba was happy to express his joy for The Fallen Sun‘s success, with the Netflix film having done quite well on the streamer’s viewership lists when it landed back in March, and said he was all but ready to dive back into the shoes of his beloved detective character for another.

Luther ended up being one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, which is an incredible achievement, since it was the first film from the television show. I’m hoping to make another one. I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him, as a story and as a character. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed.”

Of course, if we can indeed expect more Luther on the horizon, it would be wise to take a handful of notes from the Fallen Sun experience. Elba and Andy Serkis, who portrayed the antagonist David Robey, may have been spectacular, and the wickedly gruesome edge made for a delectable if stomach-churning draw. Unfortunately, you can only get so much mileage out of scenery and gravitas alone, so it would be wise to take The Fallen Sun‘s plot as a learning opportunity rather than a point of reference.

Either way, anyone familiar with the BBC Studios show knows exactly what this franchise is capable of when all the right pieces fall into place, so we’ll be rooting for Elba and all of his Luther-adjacent endeavors going forward.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is available to stream on Netflix.
