Though it started off as a 2011 Black List project, The Imitation Game is now picking up steam. Originally set to star Leonardo DiCaprio (which didn’t pan out), the film found a new lead man in Benedict Cumberbatch earlier this year. Now, he has a co-star as Keira Knightley has signed on to star in the upcoming film from Headhunters helmer Morten Tyldum.
Based on the biography “Alan Turing: The Enigma,” the story will revolve around “the English multi-hyphenate — mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, computer scientist — whose cracking of ciphers made a massive difference in World War II and whose exploration into early computer design paved the way for the technologies we have now. However, he was a closeted homosexual who, once he came out, subjected himself to “treatment” programs and sadly took his own life in 1954.”
We don’t know yet who Knightley will play but given her status as an A-list talent, you can be sure that it will be a nice, big meaty role.
So far, this film is coming along together very well. Though I’m not too familiar with Turing or his life story, it sounds like good material for a biopic and Cumberbatch is easily one of my favorite actors currently working in Hollywood. While I’m not the biggest Keira Knightley fan, never having seen the big deal about her that most critics seem to make, she’s still a talented performer who will no doubt add a lot to the film.
Plus, with both her and Cumberbatch signed on, you can bet that some other A-list talent will now be flocking to the project.
