Actor Kevin Costner, most recently the star of the critically acclaimed television miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, looks to be going through a sort of career rebirth. Deadline reports that the actor, who will soon play Jonathan Kent in the upcoming Man of Steel, is being courted for big screen roles in the Jack Ryan film and Three Days to Kill.
In the still-untitled Jack Ryan film, set to star Star Trek‘s Chris Pine and directed by Kenneth Branagh (who will also play the villain), Costner will take on the role of a CIA mentor to Pine’s Jack Ryan. The role is said to be an original one, and would have Costner’s character recruit and train Ryan.
The actor has also been offered the starring role in Luc Besson’s action thriller Three Days to Kill. He would take on the role of Ethan Renner, a dying government assassin looking to reconcile with his daughter as he takes on one last mission. The film is said to be similar in tone to Besson’s Taken, and reports indicate that McG may be interested in directing.
At 57 years old, Kevin Costner has won two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes, but has not carried with him the same big screen potential that he used to in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Having portrayed such a diverse number of characters in his career, I think he has a great set of acting chops and deserves another try at bat.
What do you think? Is it too late for Costner to be a bonafide leading man?
