The career resurgence train rolls along for Kevin Costner, as this week sees him taking the lead role in Midnight Delivery for producer Guillermo del Toro. The film is set to be directed by Otto Bathurst, who has done some work on television but will be making his feature debut with this one.

The plot makes it sound as if Costner will be headed into Liam Neeson’s lucrative revenge thriller territory, as it concerns a father (Costner) who is trafficking cocaine on the eponymous flight to save his estranged daughter from a Mexican drug cartel. The script was written by Neil Cross, best known as the creator of the BBC One series Luther.

Midnight Delivery has me particularly excited because I’m thinking Bathurst could be another one of del Toro’s directorial discoveries, in the vein of Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) and Andres Muschietti (Mama). Plus, it will be nice to see a production of his that is not overtly supernatural in nature.

As far as Costner goes, he finally seems to be embracing his paternal side of late, with his role as Pa Kent in Man of Steel and his upcoming part as Chris Pine’s mentor in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. He’ll have a busy 2014 too with director Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day as well as Luc Besson’s Three Days to Kill.

So far, Midnight Delivery sounds pretty promising and with Costner leading and del Toro pulling the strings, I think that this is definitely one to look out for.
