The organization as a whole might have been destroyed in The Golden Circle, but the Kingsman franchise is still going strong. A prequel titled The Great Game, which will explain the origins of the fine-tailored English secret service during World War I, is set to arrive in February 2020 and following that will be Kingsman 3, set to conclude the story of Taron Egerton’s Eggsy and Colin Firth’s Harry Hart.
Writer/director Matt Vaughn also worked with Egerton on this month’s Elton John biopic Rocketman, and while speaking about the film with Digital Spy, he discussed his hopes for Kingsman 3. The filmmaker revealed that work could begin on the threequel as soon as later this year. If not, then early 2020.
“We’ve got to finish off the Eggsy and Harry relationship. The final chapter of their relationship needs to be told, which we’ve got ready to do, and I’m hoping to shoot that later this year or the beginning of next year.”
Kingsman 3 will have to follow on from the big reshuffle of the status quo that occurred in The Golden Circle. If you’ll recall, Merlin, Roxy and all the Kingsman agents are dead, but their American cousins the Statesman are lending a hand, with Channing Tatum’s Agent Tequila moving to London. Meanwhile, Harry’s resurrected after his death in The Secret Service and Eggsy’s gone and become a prince, as the sequel ended with him marrying Princess Tilde of Sweden.
There was some worry that Disney might shelve the franchise after they took over Fox, but Vaughn’s comments assure us that there’s no need to worry on that front. This follows on from previous reports confirming that the studio plans to release the period prequel movie as expected.
Featuring an all-star cast including Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kingsman: The Great Game arrives in theaters next Valentine’s Day. Kingsman 3 will then likely follow in 2021.
