While Lucasfilm and Disney have been keeping a close eye on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, there’s absolutely nothing they can do to stop fans from speculating on what’ll happen come December.

And the latest seems to be directed towards the Knights of Ren, the most recent group of mysterious, mask-wearing villains in the series. A recent theory that’s gaining some traction on Reddit provides some details about what these badass-looking soldiers could be about. And it’s sounding like they may be more important than we thought.

User Matarreyes suggests that the group’s purpose may not be a subservient role to Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), given that the emotional villain regularly leads Stormtroopers. They hypothesize, rather, that after the events of The Last Jedi, the clan’s there to check Kylo, “should he step out of line.” Given their physicality, they’re “a veritable threat.”

It seems like a change of heart in either direction – that is, if Ren decides to head towards the light, or “double down on [his] evilness” – could result in an epic fight.

But there could possibly be even more tension. The theory also suggests that there’s going to be additional “discontent” between Kylo and those in the First Order. But those without the capabilities of the force, like General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), will stay quiet, despite their issues, to avoid strangulation.

Tell us, though, what do you think J.J. Abrams’ plans are for the Knights of Ren? Do they present a posable threat to the young and powerful Kylo? Or will they be another group of apathetic, gun-wielding followers? Let us know what you think in the comment section below, and be sure to test out your theory once Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
