Latest Disney News: A bigger Disney Plus content purge looms as ‘Little Mermaid’ fans decide that new song ain’t so bad after all

You've only got one bridge, Disney. Try not to burn it.

Just when you thought the week might end on a calm note, Disney up and announces (very quietly, mind you) that it plans to one-up itself by going Round 2 on another Disney Plus purge. The news broke this afternoon and is already stirring up concerns over which movie and TV shows will be on the chopping block this time around.

Thankfully, it’s not all scary news. Well, unless you count Disney stepping in to change a pivotal scene in 20th Century Studios’ horror movie The Boogeyman because, well — you’ll see in a second. Meanwhile, that oh-so-divisive song from The Little Mermaid (you know the one) is experiencing its very own renaissance. Juicy stuff today, Disney peeps. Let’s dive in.

Hold on tight, another Disney Plus purge is on its way

That’s right — after already axing over 50 movies and TV shows from Disney Plus and Hulu last month, the House of Mouse has decided that’s actually not enough. According to Variety, the company “currently anticipates additional produced content will be removed from its DTC and other platforms, largely during the remainder of its third fiscal quarter.” In layman’s terms that means more of your favorite movie and TV shows will be expunged from Disney Plus and Hulu by the time Independence Day rolls around, for all my fellow Americans. The company’s third fiscal quarter ends on July 2, so if you have a favorite movie or TV in mind, keep your fingers crossed it makes the cut.

Remember when everyone hated Awkwafina’s rap in The Little Mermaid? Not anymore, apparently

In case you were wondering what hell looks like covered in ice, it is the widespread appreciation and even acclaim for the new song in The Little Mermaid, “The Scuttlebutt.” The Lin-Manuel Miranda original was highly criticized prior to the movie’s premiere, but once everyone got a chance to see the musical number in (live) action, it was decided the two-minute rap song featuring Awkwafina’s, ahem, distinct vocals ain’t so bad after all. In fact, if you don’t think about it too much, it’s downright catchy.

Disney steps in to stop Princess Leia from holding a lightsaber in Stephen King’s The Boogeyman

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Disney, the prizewinner of squeaky clean images, stepped in to prevent 20th Century Studios’ The Boogeyman from including a scene that included the adorable child actress Vivien Lyra Blair, who you will recognize as Princess Leia from Disney Plus’ Obi-Wan Kenobi, from holding a knock-off lightsaber on camera. It was only meant to be a nightlight, but the image of Blair holding the very thing her character is known for in the Star Wars universe while being terrorized by the boogeyman was the line in the sand Disney was willing to draw.

That’s all we got for you today. See you back here in a couple of days for the freshest of scoops. Oh, forgot to mention — Happy Pride!
