Latest Marvel News: DC could prove to be the savior of Phase Five as ‘Quantumania’ director drops terrifying ‘X-Men’ news

Let's hope Kevin Feige doesn't have his ear to the ground for once.

Despite only having been playing in theaters for three days, the autopsy on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is already well underway, even if the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s latest opinion-splitter has already done a number on the box office.

The director of the Phase Five kickoff may have just sent a chill down the spines of the mutant-loving masses, though, while the brains behind one of the pre-MCU era’s most divisive blockbusters has finally come clean and admitted it failed to live up to the vision he had in his head.

One of the biggest criticisms of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been a paper-thin script bogged down by eye-rolling dialogue and mountainous exposition, so there’s every reason to be worried after director Peyton Reed revealed that writer Jeff Loveness is a huge X-Men fan.

Ditching the four and five writers on the first two installments in favor of a solitary scribe for the threequel didn’t pay big dividends, and the prospect of Loveness potentially eying another MCU gig in addition to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will no doubt cause concern among the fandom.

We’ll have a better idea in a few years as to whether or not the student has the potential to become the master, but for now, the prospect of the DC Studios co-CEO riding to the rescue of the MCU’s lukewarm recent output is irony at its finest.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is less than three months away, and after continually being burned by underwhelming offerings on screens both big and small, fingers are crossed tighter than ever that the outgoing director will leave with his head held high.

Before the age of Marvel Studios, the company’s comic book properties were scattered all across down to decidedly varying results, with one of the most divisive proving to be Ang Lee’s Hulk.

Either an underrated gem or an overstuffed mess depending on where you get your information, the Academy Award winner finally came clean and admitted that it was “an indulgence” that left the marketing team “confused” how to sell it to the masses.

Quantumania substitutes bad reviews for big box office in typical MCU style

Reviews be damned, the MCU remains as bulletproof at the box office as ever, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania setting more than a couple of noteworthy milestones through its opening weekend.

Not only a franchise-high debutant or the superhero saga’s fifth consecutive $100+ million opener, it’s also the third top-grossing February release of all-time behind fellow Marvel bedfellows Black Panther and Deadpool, so there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

That’s it for another weird and wonderful week in the world of Marvel, but be sure to check back tomorrow when the cycle begins anew.
