The defining development happening in the entertainment world right now is of course the SAG-AFTRA strike, so naturally it’s having repercussions for the Marvel Cinematic Universe too. Specifically, one picketing actor hasn’t held back in sharing their thoughts about the injustices going on at Disney, which rather calls their future as part of the Mouse House-owned franchise into question. Elsewhere, we get an explanation for why an MCU series was wiped from the record as another debuts on a whole other platform.
A Guardian of the Galaxy’s strong words against Bob Iger leave folks convinced we’ll never see them in the MCU again
Sean Gunn is earning a lot of applause online for his spirited comments to Disney chief Bob Iger on the actors’ strike picket line, hitting back at the CEO for his exorbitant paychecks. While Gunn might be proving himself to be a hero off-screen as well as on with his speech, however, some are worrying if this means we really have seen the last of Kraglin in the MCU, after he became a founding member of the new Guardians team in Vol. 3. It’s just possible that the old “X died on the way back to their home planet” meme is about to become more accurate than ever with this cosmic character. Still, Gunn probably won’t mind too much as he’s guaranteed employment in his brother James’ DC universe.
A veteran of a cult favorite Marvel series wiped from Disney Plus reveals the unsurprising yet depressing reason why
Runaways isn’t a perfect series, but with its central sapphic superhero relationship — a first for the MCU — it’s definitely a vastly underrated entry in the Marvel TV pantheon. That’s why it’s tragic that it was recently removed from Disney Plus in many territories. Star Ariela Barer — who, like Gunn, is prepared to hit back at the studio amid the strike — has now named the sadly expected reason for the removal, claiming it was due to tax writeoffs. So many Marvel and DC projects have been made impossible to watch over the past few years for this reason that “tax purposes” has become a bigger killer of superheroes than Thanos and Kang combined.
MCU streaming series are apparently now jumping ship to broadcast TV, and the first might surprise you
But while Disney Plus is erasing certain Marvel series from existence, its also sharing some of its toys with other branches of the Mickey Mouse empire for the first time. It’s been confirmed that Ms. Marvel will be making its broadcast TV debut when the Iman Vellani show’s six episodes to air in two batches as part of The Wonderful World of Disney on ABC this August. At first, it seems curious that, say, WandaVision or Loki weren’t chosen to hop from streaming to network before Ms. Marvel, but if you think about it that series is particularly ABC-friendly. But is this a one-off or the start of a new trend of Marvel TV de-evolving back to traditional platforms? We’re interested to find out.
Hollywood may be shutting up shop for the moment, but that doesn’t mean the Marvel news machine is slowing down. So don’t go anywhere.
