Latest Marvel News: Sony’s $50 million payday proves the Spider-Verse is supreme but Tom Holland still threatens to swing out on Spider-Man

Meanwhile, an OG Avenger paves the way for their MCU return.

Congratulations, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse! Unlike so many other movies out there, Sony’s super-successful animated sequel has managed to follow up positive reviews with a wildly successful opening at the box office that’s seeing it swing far ahead from both the MCU and the DCU. Elsewhere, one of the Marvel universe’s founding Avengers surprises fans by revealing they’re up for a return, even as their own protege calls for the next generation of heroes to grab the spotlight.

Projections were already looking good, but Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ended up smashing expectations by landing a hefty $51.7 million on its first day in theaters, which makes it officially the biggest opening day of any movie released this year, beating even fellow superhero hit Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and obviously zipping past flops like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. We’ll have to see if The Flash can top it in a couple of weeks, but it certainly looks like it’ll be hard to dislodge the sequel from its pedestal as 2023’s most all-round successful comic book film.

As Jeremy Renner refuses to rule out a Hawkeye comeback, his on-screen replacement urges Kevin Feige for new blood

Jeremy Renner only just recently recovered from a near-death experience, but just like his avenging alter ego, he’s not letting that stop him from being ready to dive back into action. While attending Phoenix Fan Fusion in Arizona this weekend, the Clint Barton star admitted he’d “do it in a heartbeat” if he got the call from Marvel to pick up his bow and quiver again. It’s ironic, then, that Hawkeye’s own apprentice, Hailee Steinfeld, has revealed that she’s “chomping at the bit” to see Kate Bishop form the Young Avengers and see the MCU’s youth take over from the old guard. Let the Hawkeye-Off begin!

Tom Holland says he’d be a “fool” not to make Spider-Man 4, but it would still take a big ask for him to sign on

After basically a year and a half of silence, we’ve finally receiving some updates on Spider-Man 4, even if they aren’t as encouraging as we’d like. The latest? Tom Holland continues to hold out on confirming he’s definitely back as Peter Parker. According to the actor, it all depends on if Sony and Marvel can pull together a movie that’s even better than No Way Home. As he told ExtraTV, if they can manage that then he’d be a “fool to say [he] wouldn’t.” But if they can’t, then he’s happy to “swing off into the sunset” and let someone else slip into his spandex suit.

The latest updates from across the Spider-Verse and the other corners of the Marvel multiverse are never far away, so don’t go anywhere.
