Latest Sci-Fi News: Fans decry the idea of a ‘Star Wars’ multiverse as rumors of a trailer for ‘The Marvels’ divides the MCU fandom

'Star Wars' does not need to get in on the multiverse trend.

Star Wars continues to be the dominating topic in sci-fi spheres, thanks to the weekend’s official Star Wars Celebration.

The annual event saw a range of familiar faces arrive to engage in meet and greets, photo ops, and panels, providing fans with the chance to see high-profile stars and longtime favorites in the flesh. Among the star-studded lineup, fans were delighted to learn of newcomer Ivanna Sakhno, who’s set to portray dark Force user Shin Hati. The incoming villain is already piquing fan interest, as they ponder her role in the highly-anticipated Ahsoka

The inevitable fixation on Star Wars over the weekend predictably prompted plenty of fan theories and ponderings about the future of the franchise, and it seems most viewers are very much not on-board with the idea of a Star Wars multiverse. The idea for an MCU-style multiverse, but set within a galaxy far, far away, was immediately shot down by fans, who are more than happy with the franchise’s current scope.

Speaking of the MCU, the franchise wasn’t completely absent from conversations in recent days, despite Star Wars’ best efforts. News that a trailer for The Marvels could arrive at any day is ramping up chatter around the 2023 flick, and early responses are exhaustingly predictable. While there’s plenty of excitement to be found among fans of the sprawling franchise, web users are bracing themselves for inevitable pushback against the film. Captain Marvel was subject to plenty of hate when it first released, and fans aren’t expecting The Marvels to fare any better.

Rumors of an impending trailer for The Marvels quickly prompted discourse online, as half the web celebrated the upcoming film, and the other half jumped to deride it. We still know almost nothing about the Brie Larson and Iman Vellani-led film, but that’s far from enough to stop the trolls from lunging for its throat. There is absolutely no way to please certain audience members, and most people are simply hoping to ignore pushback, and focus instead on their excitement for the 2023 flick.

Ardent Star Wars fans were thrilled to learn of Lars Mikkelsen’s return to the galaxy for the live-action Ahsoka, but another incoming villain is competing for the Star Wars staple’s fanfare. Ivanna Sakhno’s Shin Hati is set to make her debut in the upcoming series, as a dark Force user intent on taking Ahsoka down. Reports of her skill with a lightsaber, paired with news of her character’s exploration of the relationship between the dark and light sides of the Force, quickly ramped up excitement for the character, as fans gushed over yet another intriguing addition to the show’s cast.

No one wants a Star Wars multiverse

The Star Wars universe is already massive, and the sprawling galaxy hardly needs an excuse to expand even more. Despite this, a fan floated the idea of a Star Wars multiverse, and was quickly shot down by the franchise’s many supporters.

While the idea of a multiverse would allow the franchise to retcon certain unpopular entries in its lineup, most people are entirely unimpressed with the concept. It was flagged as entirely “unnecessary” and overcomplicated by commenters, who largely urged viewers with a distaste for certain Star Wars entries to simply… watch something else. What a novel concept.
