Remember those “old-school” Alien: Covenant sets that Michael Fassbender was gushing about just recently; the same ones that were likened to Star Wars, Blade Runner and other genre greats? Well, British tabloid The Daily Mail has unearthed a series of on-set photos from 20th Century Fox’s anticipated sequel, offering us a peek behind the curtain to see what all the fuss is about.

Currently deep in production at an undisclosed location in Sydney, Australia, we should warn you that the images included below stray into spoiler territory. So if you want to remain on media blackout about all things Alien: Covenant until release, stay on this side of the jump.

Still with us? Comprising four set snaps in total, Daily Mail’s findings paint a grizzly scene of destruction, with scores of charred bodies littering the steps of what looks to be an ancient monument. Think the eerily preserved bodies of Pompeii, though we understand Ridley Scott’s story of fallen civilizations takes place on a planet far away from the treasured Italian city.

Keeping the aesthetic of Prometheus alive, there’s also a gigantic statue of a human head, indicating that the story threads relating to the Engineers and their potential origins will be further explored in 2017. Plotting course for that interstellar expedition is Fassbender as the strange synthetic, David, along with a host of newcomers including Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Billy Crudup, and Demian Bichir.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.”

Alien: Covenant is expected to lens Down Under over the coming months, ahead of a theatrical release on August 4, 2017. As for those spoiler-heavy snaps, they can be found in the gallery below.
