After the release of Insidious: The Last Key, the future of the franchise might be uncertain. Mainly because its co-creator, Leigh Whannell, hasn’t written Insidious 5 yet and might not write it at all.
When asked about why he may not move forward in a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, here’s what he said:
“I’m not sure if I’m going to be involved in all honesty. I love the films and franchise and it’s been a good experience, but the question is always do I have anything to offer. Maybe a fresh set of eyes is the best thing for this franchise if they’re going to continue it. So we’ll see.”
While this announcement may make loyal fans disappointed, there is plenty of logic to Whannell’s decision. The storyline involving Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne’s characters is finished, as the writer himself has said. And while Lin Shaye has appeared in every installment to date, the only way for her to come back at this point would be if the fifth entry was a prequel, since her character died in the first film.
So, it seems the only options are either the producers make the next outing set in the past and have Shaye return, or include an entirely new band of characters for a whole new story. If they pulled the latter, then admittedly, it’d feel weird not having any familiar faces on screen. Still, at the very least, I suppose fans would be satisfied that they’d be getting another Insidious film.
As for Whannell, even if he doesn’t do a fifth movie, he’s still remaining involved in the genre. He’s got the horror actioner Upgrade starring Logan Marshall-Green coming out next week and is also currently writing an untitled psychological horror film.
“I’m writing a film right now, kind of psychological horror meaning not supernatural horror,” he said. “So we’ll see how it turns out. If it turns out not terrible, I’ll direct it.”
Tell us, what do you make of all this? Should they do an Insidious 5? Or have you had enough of the franchise at this point? As always, let us know in the comments section down below.
