It’s officially official: Jesse Eisenberg will reprise the role of Lex Luthor for 2017’s Justice League movie, while there’s also word that Wonder Woman‘s Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) will presumably swing by for a cameo.
Confirmation comes to us via a Warner Bros. press release (thanks, Batman-News), which lists the cast members on board for Zack Snyder’s hotly-anticipated ensemble movie. Among them are those attached to play DC’s finest – Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher and Ezra Miller – before WB notes that Justice League has made room in its ranks for both Nielsen and Eisenberg.
Truth be told, in the aftermath of Batman V Superman, the latter has been continually linked with the 2017 tentpole, but this telegram from Warner Bros. essentially puts any and all rumors to bed to confirm that, yes, the sneering Lex Luthor will be making an appearance.
Even if Justice League is poised to focus on a new, emerging supervillain, tossing Eisenberg’s scheming trickster into the mix certainly makes a lot of sense. After all, thanks to that eerie Communion deleted scene from Dawn of Justice, we know that Lex has knowledge of both Steppenwolf and, presumably, Darkseid, a nemesis that is all but confirmed for Zack Snyder’s team-up movie.
Could Lex Luthor now be in possession of those all-powerful Mother Boxes? Or will Snyder and the writing team leverage his character as more of a narrative bridge to transition from one bat-shit insane villain to the next? We’ll find out in due time.
On November 17, 2017, Justice League will be unleashed into theatres. Before that though is Wonder Woman, which is on course for June 2, 2017.
